Winter / Spring 2018 7 EQUIPMENT REVIEW ATS Traffic Background Crash cushions are devices intended to reduce the damage to structures, vehicles and motorists resulting from a motor vehicle collision. These impact attenuators are designed to absorb the colliding vehicles kinetic energy to maintain the physical integrity of passengers and drivers, and reduce the likelihood of injury or death. The most important standards for crash tests on Crash Cushions are: •  European Standard EN 1317 – recognizes 4 performance classes (50, 80, 100 and 110 km/h) and 3 types of vehicles (900 kg, 1300 kg and 1500 kg) •  American Standard NCHRP 350 – recognizes 3 different performance classes (TL1, TL2 and TL3) and 2 types of vehicles (900 kg and 2000 kg) •  American Standard MASH – recognizes 3 different performance classes (TL1, TL2 and TL3) and 2 types of vehicles (1100 kg and 2270 kg) Ultimately, the most important factor is that the product provides the highest possible protection for drivers and passengers in the vehicle. The SMA (Safety Modular Absorber) 110P / TL3 Crash Cushion is designed and manufactured in Italy. It is the first of its kind to successfully perform both European and American crash ratings: •  Speed class 110 km/h crash test according to the European Standard EN 1317 •  TL3 test according to the American Standard NCHRP 350 Replace an entire damaged unit at a lower cost than repairing it The current marketplace in Canada for crash cushions has changed very little in the last 10-15 years: traditionally there have only been two manufacturers.
